    pH measures how acidic or basic water is on a 0 to 14 scale. 7 is neutral. Below 7 is acidic, above 7 is basic.

    Why it matters

    pH controls how toxic ammonia is, how well livestock breathe and metabolise, and how chlorine sanitises in pools. Sudden swings stress fish and corals more than slow drift outside the ideal range.

    How to test

      Collect a clean sample

      Use a rinsed glass or test vial. Avoid skimmer surface foam.

      Use a strip, drop kit, or probe

      Drop kits and calibrated probes are more accurate than strips for pH.

      Read at correct temperature

      Probe readings drift with temperature. Calibrate weekly with 7.0 and 10.0 buffer.

      Log the result

      Trend over time matters more than any single reading.

    How to correct low ph

    1. Identify the cause first

      Low pH is usually low alkalinity (KH). Raise KH and pH follows.

    2. Aquarium: add crushed coral or aragonite

      Slow, stable buffer. Add 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons in the filter.

    3. Pool / spa: add soda ash or borax

      Soda ash raises pH and alkalinity. Add half the recommended dose, retest in 4 hours.

    4. Aerate the water

      Stripping CO2 raises pH naturally. Run a powerhead or pool jet upward.

    How to correct high ph

    1. Identify the cause

      High pH often comes from CO2 stripping, soda ash overdose, or new concrete in pools.

    2. Pool / spa: add muriatic acid or dry acid

      Add slowly. Half-dose, wait 4 hours, retest. Never mix acids.

    3. Aquarium: add CO2 or driftwood

      CO2 injection lowers pH stably. Driftwood and Indian almond leaves leach tannins that gently lower pH.

    4. Avoid pH-down chemicals long term

      They mask the underlying alkalinity issue and cause swings.

    FAQs

    Is a pH of 8.4 safe for fish?

    Yes for African cichlids, brackish, and saltwater livestock. No for most South American or Southeast Asian community fish, which prefer 6.8 to 7.4.

    Why does my pH drop overnight in a planted tank?

    Plants stop consuming CO2 in the dark. Respiration adds CO2, which forms carbonic acid and lowers pH. A 0.4 to 0.6 swing is normal.

    Can I use pH-down in my aquarium?

    Not recommended. It works for hours, then alkalinity rebounds the pH and stresses fish. Fix the alkalinity first.
